Corpus Christi (Nueces County) — One of three local contractors that bid on the Del Mar College East Campus old Fine Arts Music Building renovation will be proceeding on a budget that increased more than $1 million above the original estimated base bid.

John Strybos, the college’s chief physical facilities officer, recommended on Nov. 9 and the Board of Regents accepted Victory Building Team as the preferred contractor, based on their competitive sealed proposal.

After scoring the three companies on their submitted prices and qualifications, Strybos said Marshall Company ranked second and Summit Building & Design ranked third. Summit Building & Design was considered local because they have an office in Beeville, but their corporate headquarters is in Laredo.

Funding for this project comes from the 2014 bond and the original estimated base bid was about $5.7 million. However, the base bid at the time the project was solicited increased to $6,875,000. Strybos told the regents that the increase was due to building material supply disruptions that have been occurring because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project included three alternates–two that concern interior upgrades and the costliest being reroofing the Drama Building. Because the pricing was favorable, Strybos recommended and the regents approved all three alternates.

That brought the total project cost to $7,717,000.

Turner|Ramirez Architects of Corpus Christi filed a report with the state this past summer describing the project as a demolition of the building interior, new tenant finish-outs that include eight new classrooms, 17 administrative offices, a pre-function space, and a computer lab surrounding a courtyard.

There is also planned an addition of four officers under the existing overhang. The area of construction was reported as 22,098 square feet.

The renovation of the old Fine Arts Music Building comes almost two years after the Del Mar College regents, students and the community celebrated the opening of a $8.26 million addition, referred to as the Music Addition, that extends east of the existing Fine Arts Music Building.

The two-story, 20,000 square-foot addition was constructed by Journeyman and designed by Richter Architects.
